Charming small format edition (four volumes in-16), of the work which was at the origin of the imprisonment of Bussy-Rabutin. The latter entrusted the manuscript of his Love Story to a close friend of Madame de Montglas, Madame de la Baume, for only two days during which she made a copy which circulated without the authorization of its author. "Not content with joining forces with all the abused people in Condé's Love Story, [Mrs. de la Baume] had it printed, not without having adulterated it a little. The book appeared barely three months after the 'election of the author to the Academy. The scandal breaks out' (Pia, Dictionary).
In this work written in the form of letters, Bussy makes fun of high figures, all under pseudonyms. One finds there the king, Mr. and Mrs. d'Olonne, the abbot Fouquet, duke of Condé, Mr. and Mrs. de Chatillon, and others.
Four contemporary bound volumes. Brown half-sheepskin, decorated spine, mosaic title and volume numbers. Golden fillets, golden H.B. initials at the bottom.
Condition: well-preserved bindings. Very slight rubbing to the caps. Foxing, vary according to the pages, some browned pages. Good copy.
