Full brown morocco, covers adorned with gilt framing fillets with fleurons on the corners, spine with 5 threaded raised bands, author, title, year, gilt boxes and top, gilt threaded cups, inside covers bordered and decorated with gilt fillets, cashmere printed silk endpapers , cover and spine preserved., advertisement sheet bound in fine, lined slipcase (slightly rubbed) Numbered copy. 1/75 copies on Imperial Japan. Edition adorned with 250 black and color illustrations including 15 out of text.

The Flemish Legends, published in the review Uylenspiegel to which he collaborated, enjoyed a certain success but the rest of his work had to wait for the generation of La Jeune Belgique, that of Camille Lemonnier, Georges Eekhoud for example, to be recognized.
De Coster's masterpiece, The Legend and the Heroic, Joyous and Glorious Adventures of Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak in Flanders and elsewhere, displeased conformist Belgian circles. Known throughout the world, translated into all European languages, it was ignored for a long time in its own country but was to enjoy universal success.
The Legend of Ulenspiegel embodies the heart and spirit of Flanders, evoking its folklore, climate and traditions. It mixes history and myth, the adventure of a family with that of a people. De Coster, a French-speaking writer, reconstructs an era as a visionary poet and creates a new language in the great Rabelaisian tradition. Till Ulenspiegel is above all the defender of freedom, the one who fought against the oppression of Philip II of Spain and the Duke of Alba, the hero who stood up against all forms of oppression.
