The Roman Republic of 1849, also known as the Second Roman Republic (having been the first that of the Napoleonic era), was a republican state that arose in Italy during the Risorgimento following an internal revolt which in the territories of the Papal State resulted in the flight of Pope Pius IX from Rome.
