Beautiful illustrated bible (Sixtine-Clementine Vulgate) in 4° size, printed in Venice, by Giunta publisher in 1616. This Biblia Sacra (Holy Bible) is richly illustrated with 251 amazing engravings. It's in very good condition and COMPLETE. The 251 illustrations are very detailed and well contrasted, the text is also enriched by large decorated initials and engraved vignettes as headpieces. Every single chapter has a a large vignette, which provides us with insight into the life of faith of the time. Only three copies listed in libraries in Italy. Another copy in Spain, in the UK and in the USA. In 1546 the Council of Trent ordered a revision of the Vulgate Latin Bible to establish an authorized Catholic text. Pope Sixtus V (1521-1590) ordered the preparation of the new edition, and was published for the first time in May 1590, just few months before the Pope dead.

Sixtus V worked by himself on the edition of the Vulgate. From 17 November 1588 until June 1589, he revised the text; until the end of November 1589, he corrected the proofs. Sixtus made the corrections using simple conjectures and working quickly. The Sistine edition (Pope Sixtus V or Sixti Quinti) was replaced in November 1592 by the Clementine Vulgate or Sixto-Clementine Vulgate as the new official version of the Vulgate by Pope Clement VIII (1592–1605), became and remained the official Bible of the Catholic Church until the Nova Vulgata replaced it in 1979. Aside from its use in prayer, liturgy, and private study, the Vulgate served as inspiration for ecclesiastical art and architecture, hymns, countless paintings, and popular mystery plays. The genuine antique illustrations are 7 cm tall and 12,5 cm long each, and show great craftsmanship for woodcuts of such delicacy and complexity.

Author: Pope Sixtus V (Italian: Sisto V; 1521-1590), born Felice Piergentile, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 24 April 1585 to his death in August 1590. As a youth, he joined the Franciscan order, where he displayed talents as a scholar and preacher, and enjoyed the patronage of Pius V, who made him a cardinal. As a cardinal, he was known as Cardinal Montalto. As Pope, he energetically rooted out corruption and lawlessness across Rome, and launched a far-sighted rebuilding programme that continues to provoke controversy, as it involved the destruction of antiquities. His foreign policy was regarded as over-ambitious, and he excommunicated both Queen Elizabeth I of England and King Henry IV of France. He is recognized as a significant figure of the Counter-Reformation. In May 1590 the Sixtine Vulgate was issued.

Author: Pope Clement VIII (Italian: Clemente VIII; 1536-1605), born Ippolito Aldobrandini, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 2 February 1592 to his death in March 1605. Born in Fano, Italy to a prominent Florentine family, he initially came to prominence as a canon lawyer before being made a Cardinal-Priest in 1585. In 1592 he was elected Pope and took the name of Clement. During his papacy he effected the reconciliation of Henry IV of France to the Catholic faith and was instrumental in setting up an alliance of Christian nations to oppose the Ottoman Empire in the so-called Long War. He also successfully adjudicated in a bitter dispute between the Dominicans and the Jesuits on the issue of efficacious grace and free will. In 1600 he presided over a jubilee which saw many pilgrimages to Rome. In November 1592, he published the Clementine Vulgate. It was issued with the Bull Cum Sacrorum (9 November 1592) which asserted that every subsequent edition must be assimilated to this one, that no word of the text could be changed, and that not even variant readings could be printed in the margin. This new official version of the Vulgate, known as the Clementine Vulgate or Sixto-Clementine Vulgate, became and remained the official Bible of the Catholic Church until the Nova Vulgata replaced it in 1979.
