Rare first edition of the French translation and gloss by Le Maître de Sacy (1613-1684) of the Book of Job, one of the Books of the Tanakh and the Old Testament.

A didactic poem written in prose, it is generally considered to be about the problem of Evil -

This text is part of the Bible called "De Port Royal" published in separate books (1634-1698,) and which was authoritative in the French-speaking Catholic world until the beginning of the twentieth century -

“As the book of Job is one of the most obscure of Scripture, the author of the translation has put at the head a fairly long preface in which he touches on several points which needed clarification. Some look at the person of Job & others his story.

Fair condition of the binding, losses on the spine: top and bottom (briefly masked by dark paper) + top loss of the 1st cover + small loss on the 2nd cover and corners, scattered scratches -

Good condition inside, Title page worn at the hinge but still well attached, some dirt or wetting without consequence but the whole is quite fresh and solid, pretty band and drop cap, nice engraving on the title page -
