Between 1941 and 1944, during the German occupation, a remarkably beautiful series of children's books and games of a mysterious character who called himself "El Pintor" appeared. The publications of this unnamed Spanish painter are nowadays regarded as precursors of the modern, 'artistic' children's book. They were printed in large editions, but only a few copies of some have survived and have become valuable collectors' items.

Melancholy
Children of that time, now elderly, often think back to El Pintor with melancholy. The books and games of this mysterious figure cheered up children who had to enjoy themselves behind thick blackout curtains or even had to go into hiding.

The proceeds of this booklet were partly used during the war to support the resistance.
