The Campo Vaccino in Rome

Henry Berthoud (1790-1864) sculptor
Nicolas Marie Joseph Chapuis (1790-1858) delineavit

L'Artiste (Revue de Paris, illustrated fine arts weekly published from 1831 to 1904)

Beautiful glimpse of a portion of the Roman Forum, amazing in its millennial stratification, also known as Campo Vaccino because between the end of the 1500s and the whole of the 19th century it was used as a pasture for oxen as well as a market (but it was also loved by the Romans and by travelers as a meeting and walking place). On the right, the temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina can be recognized: dedicated in 141 AD, modified over the centuries (in particular, the walking surface was somewhat lower than at present), transformed into a church in the early Middle Ages (San Lorenzo in Miranda) and excavated several times during the 19th century, it retains the beautiful marble columns with Corinthian capitals (six on the facade and two pairs on the sides).

Etching and aquatint on thick unlaid paper, blank verso, fine impression, wide margins, occasional traces of humidity on the margins.
