Painter Piet Lippens (Gentbrugge, 1890 - Ghent, 1981) should be rediscovered, because he made many fascinating paintings. At the age of 17, Lippens moved to New York where he held various odd jobs. He also later traveled through the States. He learned to paint during his army service. Afterwards he moved to Chicago. After the First World War he stayed in Ghent and took lessons at the Academy for several months, including with the famous Jean Delvin. In the 1920s and 1930s he made interesting paintings in which he mainly showed landscapes and corners of the city. His work is rarely sweet, Lippens also showed prisons, factories and slums in a realistic-impressionistic style. Later he painted such farms. His social realist work in particular made him an interesting artist. 67474433
