Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. Second edition and definitive edition, much enlarged (the original edition, published in 1712, comprised only 514 pp. in one

The book begins with a glossary of medical terms. Hecquet rejects the theory of fermentation and exposes his mechanical theory of digestion ("kind of trituration"). There are chapters on symptoms related to digestion (vents, belches, colic, vomiting, bulimia, hiccups, etc.). Hecquet included in this work (T. II, pp. 415-442) the "Memory on the cause of the digestion of food" by Astruc, which advocates the role of saliva. One also finds there (T. II, pp. 505-537) the dissertation of Vieussens ("On the nature & properties of the leaven of the stomach") with the refutation of Hecquet.

Philippe Hecquet (1661-1737), born in Abbevile, began his medical studies in Paris and received a doctorate in medicine in Reims. He settled in Paris. He was an austere Jansenist and a convinced solidist. He became dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Two volumes nicely bound in full contemporary brown calfskin. Back adorned with a rich compartmentalized gilt decoration.
Condition: Decorative and attractive bindings. Slight scuffing of the leather on the covers, four pierced corners, rubbing from use. Fresh and clean interiors, old manuscript ex-libris on the titles and endpapers (crossed out). In good condition.
