Wooden sculpture depicting a holy monk (San Benedetto or San Romualdo)
Pine essence
The state of conservation is not good as the work was attacked by xylophagous insects, probably due to a stay in a humid environment, such as to erode the lower part of the sculpture.
Some traces of polychromy have been found in the upper part in undercut areas of the relief.
The best preserved parts suggest an excellently made carving with deep and detailed incisions especially for the part of the face which is well defined and expressive, characterized by a thick beard.
The sculpture is hollowed out on the back in the typical way of sculptures intended for iconostases or housed in altar architectures according to the devotional canons in use starting from the end of the fourteenth century.
The modeling of the body is similar to the sculpture of the second half of the fifteenth century in the central Italian area and more precisely in Umbria.
