First sought-after edition of Prosper Mérimée's first work, published anonymously.
This is a collection of 6 comedies introduced by a preface signed Joseph L'Estrange, pseudonym of the author.
This book is very important in the history of the theater. Mérimée, anxious to renovate the French theatre, actually tried to apply in his plays the new theory of modern theater that Stendhal had already exposed in particular in his Racine and Shakespeare in 1823. These comedies were not, however, intended to be performed.

It includes: The Spaniards in Denmark. - A woman is a devil, or the Temptation of Saint Anthony. - African Love. - Inès Mendo, or Prejudice vanquished. - Heaven and Hell.

Provenance: Bookplate of Jacques Crépineau (1932-2017), Director of the Michodière Theater -
Theater historian, recognized and appreciated collector, to whom the greatest exhibitions make
call regularly. He is a member of the Académie des 11 and the Académie Rabelais, as well as a member
of honor of the A.R.T and, as such, participates in the Jury of the Brigadier Prize. - Knight of the Order
