New edition of the Works of the great surgeon Jacques Guillemeau (1549-1613), the most distinguished disciple of Ambroise Paré and surgeon to the kings of France Charles IX, Henry III, & Henry IV.

These Works not only bring together treatises by Jacques Guillemeau; those in his hand are the Anatomical Tables, The Happy Childbirth of Women considered one of the best treatises on the subject, at the origin of obstetrics, Childhood Food, The Magazine or Collection of Surgical Instruments , the Summary of tumors against nature, the Treatise on the abuses which are committed on the procedures of the impotence of men and women, The Operation of surgery in which the author drew the essential from the works of Ambroise Paré , the Treatise on eye diseases, those on dysentery and the plague, and the Treatise on the perfect method of embalming where one finds in particular the reports of the opening of the bodies of Charles IX, Henri III and Henry IV.

To these texts are added that of Charles Guillemeau (1588-1656), son of the author, on the History of all the muscles of the human body, and two treatises collected from the lessons of Germain Courbin, bearing respectively on the Generation of the man and on the wounds.

The edition is illustrated with 31 full-page copper-engraved compositions, ie 20 anatomy engravings (cutaways) and 11 engravings of surgical instruments. The engravings of the Anatomical Tables are taken from Vesalius.

Restored binding: completely redone spine, old boards. In good fresh condition. Fairly well-preserved interior, very clean plates, some waterstaining on the inside margins of the table slips at the beginning, and on pages 666 at the end of the volume, with no damage to the text. Rare foxing. Old handwritten notes on the first endpaper and on the white sheet between pages 488-491 (the printed sheet 489-490 is missing).
