Charles-Joseph PANCKOUCKE (1736 - 1798) is a French writer and bookseller-editor, editor of the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert, and of the Encyclopédie Méthidique. A great friend of philosophers and the first "publishing magnate", he considered Ariosto "the greatest of all poets" and he decided to provide a new version in French, embarrassed as he was from the mediocrity of previous translations. It is explained in an essay on “The Art of Translating”, at the top of volume 1, 52 pages long, which remains a model of its kind. Nicolas-Étienne FRAMERY (1745-1810), musician and playwright, adapter of Puccini, will take over from the fifth volume.

volume 3: minimal gallery of verses in the upper margin without affecting the text
volume 6: the very first pages have tasted the fire with lack of paper without affecting the text
