These poems were written during a period of geographical and sentimental instability 1872-1873 since Verlaine was torn between Mathilde, his wife, and his relationship with Rimbaud.
Mathilde joined Verlaine in Brussels in July to try to bring him back to Paris, but without success. On September 7, Verlaine and Rimbaud embark in Ostend to reach London (“Birds in the night”). In October, Mathilde obtains custody of their son from the court. In December, Verlaine, ill, stays in London while Rimbaud makes a short return to France. At the beginning of April, Verlaine takes the boat from Dover to Ostend (“Beams”). The seven “Watercolors”, with English titles, were written during this stay in England. After a second stay in London, Verlaine returned to Brussels where he was joined by Rimbaud. He shoots the latter in July 1873 and is sentenced to two years in prison.
