Catawiki’s goal is to make special objects universally available. Our weekly auctions feature thousands of unusual, rare, and exceptional objects you won’t find in just any store. 21 color plates taken from l'Horticulteur Universel, Journal des Jardiniers et des Amateurs, 2nd series, years 1845 to 1847. The author, Charles Antoine Lemaire (1800-1871) successively published various illustrated Botanical journals, including (to Paris) the "Florist Garden" and the "Universal Horticulturist", then (in Brussels) the "Flora of Greenhouses and Gardens of Europe" and "Horticultural Illustration". He joined various illustrators, including Maubert, Bricogne and Duménil for the boards offered here.
Of the 21 boards, 18 are single (16 x 24.5 cm) and 3 are double (30 x 24.5 cm).
Very light to moderate yellowing, especially at the edges. Virtually no foxing, except on a board. Some boards are not cut, and are therefore slightly irregular at the edges.
We are including 6 black and white plates (5 singles and 1 double), from the same magazine, year 1840. Two of these black and white plates have a fairly large damp spot on the upper edge.
These are original plates, colored by hand (except the last 6), and enhanced with gum arabic. Good general condition and vibrant colors. 67245803
