Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman was initially employed by the Borgesius bookshop and printing company in Sappemeer (1900-1903). There followed a short period in journalism (1903-1907), after which he started a career as a printer at Knoop (Wildervank), but in 1908 he established his own printing company in Groningen (Peperstraat 5). Werkman continued to live in Groningen. He was born (April 29, 1882) in Leens, lived briefly in Assen during his youth, but he spent his secondary education and his further working life in the city of Groningen.
