In 1707, he was a medical assistant in the field hospitals of Brussels and Ghent during the War of the Spanish Succession.
In 1708 he obtained his doctorate at the University of Harderwijk and joined the Dutch army as a field surgeon during the siege of Tournai.
In 1711 he was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Altdorf, and in 1720 he became professor of anatomy and surgery at Helmstedt, where he remained for the rest of his life.
