The good quality painting depicts a scene of a dog with cats during their meal. The whole scene is framed frontally within a neutral background with light tones. In the history of art, the dog, after the horse, is the most represented among the animals, but its presence in painting, together with that of the cat, takes place precisely in the 19th century. It was in this period that the so-called "animalist painting" developed further, born in the mid-eighteenth century, and in which now the element that stands out is the feeling of fidelity that binds the animal to man. The greater presence of the dog and the cat in the paintings is therefore due to its more frequent presence in the houses, and not only in the aristocratic ones.
Friends, playmates, almost family members, the painter of the early 1900s Carl Kahler even defined them as "his wife's lovers" (Family portrait, oil on canvas, private collection), in short, anything but simple animals: they are cats, the cats most loved by humans.
We are facing that type of pictorial works that portray realistic scenes and episodes of daily life, the so-called GENDER PAINTING. In terms of style, we are close to the eclectic current, which dominated the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mixing elements of neoclassicism with others of romanticism, in a naturalistic approach with a good dose of idealism and impressionism. In the work under discussion, the artist's will to seek his own figurative manner, an expression of individual thought and feeling, is not lacking. In fact, we are faced with an experimental individualism, where the freedom of autonomous research seems to be the most suitable means of making figurative language current, in an era of sudden social changes and political ferment. In a context where the content values of the work of art are rejected, the artists then resolved to renew their meanings in a formal way. A commitment that did not concern only those of them most impatient with the pictorial tradition, but also those who trusted in a conception of art based on selected formal qualities.
Work of good pictorial quality and attention to detail. Good state of conservation, the characteristics of the applied color and the trend of the brushstroke are visible, such as: relief, direction, curvature. The work is inserted in a gilded wooden frame (dimensions, approx. 34 x 50 x 3 cm, presence of defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a gift courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request cancellation of the order ."
