Celebrating Preloved's 20th Birthday

This June, we’re celebrating Preloved’s incredible milestone - it's our 20th birthday!

Established in 1998, with the internet still in its infancy, Preloved started out as a community site for second hand enthusiasts to meet like-minded people, and to buy and sell their items.

Twenty years later and Preloved has become one of the UK's largest, and most trusted, online classifieds marketplaces, helping turn our members' clutter into cash whilst saving thousands of tonnes of furniture from landfill.

Throughout the years we've seen a shift in buy and sell trends. With current interest in upcycling and restoration projects, our Furniture & Fittings category has blossomed, from 0 listings back in 1998, to today's 59,000.

Giving Second-hand a second chance

We’ve saved 2 million items of furniture from landfill, given 1.3 million children's items a new best friend to play with and even found a new captain for 919 houseboats. We've also re-shelved 118,528 new books and started 447,110 caravanning adventures.

We’ve celebrated six years of National Second Hand Day to help spread the word that second hand isn’t second best, and three years of Restoration Day to encourage people to get their tools out and give second hand a second life!

From a papier-mache moose head, to Liberace's gold Cadillac, we've seen it all

With over 200 categories on Preloved, and over 16 million adverts posted, it’s not surprising that we’ve had a huge range of wacky and interesting adverts listed in the last 20 years!

We’ve sold everything on Preloved, from a papier-mache moose head to a Tuk Tuk autorickshaw, as well as Liberace’s gold Cadillac and The Guinness World Record holder for non-stop joke telling’s joke book collection!

Putting animal welfare first

At Preloved, we’re dedicated to finding loving and responsible forever homes for as many animals as we can. We’re also concerned with protecting endangered animals through our work with IFAW, WWF, PAAG, TRAFFIC and DEFRA.

Some of our animal welfare achievements include:
- Banned the sale of Ivory
- Accredited by the WWF, IFAW and PAAG
- Recognised by DEFRA and TRAFFIC as a leader for the reputable and trusted online sale of animals
- Banned the sale of wild caught animals
- Attended conferences at DEFRA and the House of Commons to assist with policy research
- Helped with research for the Ivory Bill 2018
