Advert Description

These beautiful beehives have been fully refurbished. However, now I have just one left with a few spare lifts, separately. The lifts (outer boxes) and roofs are painted in Dorset Cream (Farrow & Ball - in case if future need to repaint). There is also a complete set of inner boxes in which to keep your bees. The 2 inner brood boxes, queen excluder, 2 supers and crown board have all been scrubbed, dried and flamed by blowtorch to provide a sterile surface for your bees.
They also have sterilised runners.
The floors have been oiled with linseed oil mixed with turpentine, then another coat of oil.
I am also including a large feeder with each hive.

This style of hive was invented by William Broughton Carr in the 19th century.
It was one of the earliest designs of moveable frame hive, meaning bee colonies no longer had to be overwintered in straw skeps, and did not have to be killed off at the end of the season for their honey.
It was a great step forward.
The design also provides a layer of insulation between the 2 sets of boxes, meaning retention of warmth over the winter, and prevention of overheating in the summer.
A very clever idea which meant that bees started to survive from year to year, rather than succumbing as described above.
I love them and have found them very successful.
People say they are extra work, and it's true there are 2 sets of boxes to deal with, but if you have healthy, happy honeybees, where is the problem?!

I have reached the stage of life where it is necessary to downsize, and this is the reason for the sale, although I will be sorry to see them go as they have done well for me.

I have 3 full hives available, and they will be for buyer collection only.
I also have an extra roof, floor, and 3 lifts painted up in the same way, for which you could make me an offer.
It is immensely useful to have extra boxes for those times when you need to put lots of honey supers in your hive.
