Second Generation Gives Second Hand a Chance
We are a group of local people who have set up a company called 2nd Generation Furnishings in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, which according to government statistics is a deprived area. We collect and re-use good quality furniture, white goods and other household items that might otherwise have gone to landfill and this helps our environment.
Our aim is to assist anyone in need of help turning a house into a home.
We collect suitable items free of charge from the community and clean, repair and safety check them before selling them on at a low price to people who cannot afford to pay the market price.
It all started in 2010 when myself, my husband and another lady saw trucks full of good quality furniture being sent to landfill from New Charter Housing Association's empty properties. As my husband and myself work also voluntary for New Charter we approached a Chief Executive of Neighbourhoods to ask if we could do something about this, when we knew there were people in our community that desperately needed help to furnish their homes.
We opened our doors on the 10th September 2012 and since opening we have helped 900 people furnish their homes with good quality items at an affordable cost. We have also saved 22,549.5kg from landfill.
The items we sell are everything needed to furnish a home and we provide starter packs free of charge these consist of bedding towels, crockery utensils, cutlery and pans, and on numerous occasions we've provided a full house of furniture FREE of charge.
Any monies we make are put back into the Charity to cover running costs, and we are fully supported by New Charter Housing also Threshold, Tameside Council and G.M.W.D.A. We also have had many volunteers who have gone on to paid employment, and we support our volunteers in learning life skills by means of repairing, painting, cleaning, and selling the items.
The public support us through their constant donations, and we are always looking for any household items in a good, clean condition, although soft furnishings which must have a legal fire label.
We have our own website and can also be found on Facebook and Twitter -
