World Autism Acceptance Week 2024

Did you know that 2nd – 8th April is World Autism Acceptance Week? Autism prevalence rates have been increasing over recent years. This is due to a greater awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) which has lead to more accurate diagnosis, reporting, and support.

There’s been a growing movement for acceptance and inclusion in the UK, looking at the strengths and abilities of individuals with autism, rather than focusing on the challenges. There’s also been a push for better support services for individuals with autism and their families. This includes educational support, employment assistance, healthcare services, and community programs tailored to the needs of those with ASD.

We’re looking at some of the organisations that help support those with ASD, and how you too can get involved.

National Autistic Society

The National Autistic Society is a non-profit support organisation that promotes and supports the rights and interests of people with autism. They ensure people receive quality services appropriate to their needs.

This April, their biggest fundraising event is back – and 2024’s theme is another colourful one! They’re calling for people in schools, offices, and communities up and down the country to get involved in some great fundraising activities! If you’re looking for some ideas on how you can get involved, they’ve got lots of creative ways you can take part.

How about organising your very own Spectrum Colour Walk? It’s flexible, so you can do it at your own pace and place. Not into walking? No worries! Bake Sales are always a popular choice to raise funds for a great cause!

Support Dogs

Preloved has worked with Support Dogs many times over the years and we can’t sing their praises enough! Many autistic children struggle to communicate and understand danger. That’s where Support Dogs’ Autism Assistance Program steps in, changing lives for both the child and their family.

Their dogs offer companionship, reduce stress, and even ensure safety and peace of mind for families. Trained to enhance safety and independence, they make life inclusive for autistic children. With your support, they can keep providing this vital help.

Getting Involved in World Autism Acceptance Week

How could you and your friends, family, and co-workers get involved this year?

  1. Education: Take the time to learn more about autism, its characteristics, and the experiences of autistic individuals.
  2. Promote Acceptance: Take action to promote acceptance and inclusion of autistic individuals in your community, workplace, or school. Advocate for policies and practices that support diversity and accommodate the needs of autistic individuals.
  3. Spread Awareness: Use your social media platforms, blogs, or other channels to spread awareness about World Autism Acceptance Week. Share information, personal stories, or resources related to autism acceptance.
  4. Attend Events: Look for events or activities happening in your community or online related to autism acceptance. Attend workshops, seminars, panel discussions, or other events to learn more and show your support.
  5. Volunteer: Look for local organisations or charities that support autistic individuals and offer to volunteer your time and skills. You could help with events, fundraising efforts, or providing support to individuals and families affected by autism.
  6. Listen to Autistic Voices: Take the time to listen to the voices of autistic individuals. Amplify their stories, perspectives, and experiences.
  7. Continue Beyond the Week: Autism acceptance should be a year-round commitment, not just limited to one week. Continue to advocate, educate, and support autistic individuals and their families beyond World Autism Acceptance Week.
