Keeping Pets Safe Around NYE

We are all aware of the turbulent times that 2021 has prevented and who can blame some of us for wanting to close out this year with a bang. Whilst we aren’t sure what restrictions might be in place we hope it can be spent with family and friends. One thing that is guaranteed however is that we will have our pets by us. Therefore, Preloved have some suggestions on keeping pets safe around NYE. The main point of this article is to detail how both you and your pet can have an enjoyable evening.

Keeping Pets safe around NYE

What can be a nice and enjoyable evening for us can cause our pets stress and to feel uncomfortable. At the end of the day you know your pet the best. If you know that your pet isn’t fazed by the typical celebrations on NYE then lucky you.

Familiarity

It is important that they are in a secure and familiar space if possible. Whilst most pets will take comfort in the fact that they are with their owners it is also helpful that they are in a familiar place. Understandingly this can’t always be the case, if this is the case then bring things which are familiar to them with you. Maybe their bed, toys, a blanket, or something that smells of you to make them feel settled.

Security

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe around NYE is to make sure where they are is secure. If you do find your pet gets unsettled or spooked by loud noises, such as fireworks then make sure they can’t get out. If you have horses specifically make sure that they are tucked away in stables; as people can unknowingly set fireworks off right by your horse field.

Noise Control

If possible make sure that all the windows are closed. With the freezing cold temperatures I would be surprised if they were open, but you never know. Not only that but listen out for which radio stations are playing relaxing music. At Halloween Classic FM dedicated their channel to just calming dog music. However, failing that then you could always put something on from YouTube.

Exercise

As we have said it is best not to take them out during the NYE celebrations in order to try and keep your pets safe. Therefore it is important that they are well exercised before the evening festivities. Ensuring that they get a decent amount of exercise can help them relax too as they ‘ll be tired.

Company

This doesn’t work with all pets but if you have a social pet, you might find that they are better in company. One point to note is that this will only work if the company aren’t phased by fireworks or the NYE on goings. We unintentionally did this with our dog and found he was much more himself and far happier in company. That plus some music on and you never of known it was NYE.

Visit the Vets

In some cases it feels near impossible to keep your pets safe during evenings like bonfire night or NYE. If you are struggling and want some medical advise speak to your vets. They will be able to suggest the best solutions for you pet, and in more serious cases may even prescribe your pet some medication.

Happy New Year

With all this in mind we hope that you are able to have a fun and enjoyable time bring in the new year as well as keeping your pets safe. Here is to 2022 being your year!
