Second Hand Celebs

It’s official – second hand is sexy, sassy and, yes, pretty well drop-dead cool! More celebs than ever are now dipping into the world of vintage, recycled and nearly new style. They know that they can still look a million dollars, but by spending a whole lot less and taking a more sustainable approach to standing out from the crowd. Fashion-conscious and forward-thinking, we salute these second hand style superstars.

Lily Cooper (nee Allen)

We love Lily! Often out and about in vintage fashions, she has even had a foray into the world of preloved retailing when she opened her vintage clothes shop, Lucy in Disguise in London where punters could buy or rent nearly new classic fashions.

Kirstie Allsopp

When she’s not out house-hunting with her on-screen ‘hubby’ Phil ‘Pip’ Spencer, Kirstie’s the go to gal for a bit of make do & mend, crafting and upcycling. She’s turned her hand to refurbishing old furniture, creating recycled bunting and vintage floral cushion covers. Is there no end to her secondhand talents? She’s even penned a book on the subject, Kirstie’s Vintage Home (left). And check out her Channel 4 scrapbook for more inspirational ideas for updating old treasures.

Zooey Deschanel

With her instantly recognised retro bangs and distinctly kooky sixties style, Zooey Deschanel is the New Girl/Vintage It Girl stateside. She’s regularly seen on the red carpet in a range of retro dresses, sporting Alice bands, cardies, cap-sleeved dresses and flat shoes. Catch up with her on twitter and check out the vintage-twinged vibes of her musical talents as part of duo She&Him (left).

Livia Giuggioli

She may have bagged Mr Darcy (OK, actor Colin Firth) and be worth a few bucks, but that doesn’t stop Italian film producer, Livia, from taking a sustainable and occasionally thrifty approach to living. The co-owner of eco-friendly shop, Eco Age, in Chiswick, she has recently backed an initiative to get leading designers to create sustainable styles, and her two children are no strangers to handed down and secondhand clothes.

Julia Roberts

Yes, she may earn mega bucks for her movies, but Julia Roberts still has an eye for a recycled bargain, and has been reported as a regular shopper in New Mexico thrift stores, picking up some gently worn threads for her kids. A source told the National Enquirer, “She’ll come home from an outing at a thrift store with her armful of clothes for the kids and happily exclaim, ‘Look what I got just ten bucks!’.”

Taylor Swift

OK, it appears that Harry from One Direction was less than enamoured by Taylor’s preloved passion for antiques and vintage finds, but we say – go girl! The singer, who is also a fan of vintage clothes, has been spotted bagging some bargains in her home town of Los Angeles, and on London’s Portobello Road market where she reportedly splashed out £50,000 on secondhand finds! She says, “I go into a trance when I’m in an antique store.”

Alexa Chung

Adored It Girl, vintage style icon and all-round fashion muse, Alexa Chung has projected her highly individual dress sense onto the global stage. From preppy cardies with a particularly English flavour to battered denim shorts, she mixes and matches retro threads with designer wear and high street duds. A regular shopper at London markets, one of her favourite accessories is an antique cameo ring from Spitalfields Market in East London.

Kate Moss

The Original Queen of Cool, Kate has been a fan of secondhand clothes since she was a teen, way back before the term ‘vintage’ was tagged on. “It was called secondhand when I was 15,” she says. Since then, her love of all things retro has remained intact, exemplified by her choice of a vintage-inspired wedding dress for her big day.

Rachel McAdams

Star of ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Midnight in Paris’, Canadian Rachel McAdams is also an ardent green campaigner who is so convinced that ‘green is sexy‘ that she’s started a website of the same name (you, go, gilr!). It’s packed with advice, tips and ideas to lighten your footprint on the earth. Rachel says she dreams of living in a treehouse and growing her own food.

And The Rest!

So, who else makes it onto the red (or should that be green?) carpet in our secondhand celebrity schmooze-up?   Some more our favourite preloved personalities are: Natalie Portman, Sienna Miller, Chloe Sevigny, Katy Perry, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Agyness Deyn.

So if you feeling inspired to add something to your wardrobe with a bit of character, browse our vintage clothing to see what you can find!
