What To Pack When Cycling And The Best Places To Go

Now that we have dusted off our bikes for cycle to work day this week lets go exploring. One of the nice things about 2020 making us look at staycations was we remembered how beautiful the UK is. So, if you are looking for a change in pace see what sights you can see. These are some of our favourite and most beautiful cycling routes in the UK.

Things To Consider Before Your Cycling Journey

Before you head out on your adventure there are a few things you need to check. Make sure that you have your tyres are at the right pressure. How to check? The right pressure should be written on the sidewall of your tyre. It should recommend a range so have a look online for what they suggest depending on where you are cycling.

Have you saddle and riding position right. Cycling isn't supposed to be painful so this might take some altering and figuring out what's right for you. A simple rule of thumb is that when your in the riding position your handlebar should obscure your view of the front wheel hub.

Wear the right clothing. Make sure that you have the correct cycling gear and that you have checked the weather. With the UKs weather being so quick to change this is a big one! Additionally make sure your bike is equipped with some lights as you could cycle into some early dusk or fog! Its better to be prepared and stay safe!

What To Pack When Cycling

When you are headed out make sure that you are well stocked with water and snacks. You don't want to find yourself half way through your journey and lagging because you are dehydrated or famished. Some great snacks are those which release energy slowly, such as, bananas, flapjacks or protein bars. Add in some electrolyte drinks to avoid cramps if you are traveling further distances.

Some padded shorts can make your journey so much more enjoyable! Top tip - Don't wear underwear as well... It might seem like an overshare but if you do you could get saddle sores, and no one wants that. As well as some padded shorts pop in some gloves and mitts. You'll be surprised by how quickly your hands can restless, some gloves or mitts can help avoid this sensation.

If you are an experienced cyclists and are planning a long distance excursion then be sure to have a saddle pack with tools and spares. A multi-tool with a large range of tool will be your life saver should you need it. Plus a puncture repair kit/inner tube and mini pump. With these few items you can fix most issues yourself to get yourself to a save place.

It seems obvious but don't forget that bike lock and some emergency cash!

Where To Cycle

Start local and look for some traffic free trials to build up your confidence. If you haven't cycled for a while start with a five mile journey and start to build from there. Heading out cycling alone is great but why not find a group? Check out Facebook for some local cycling groups, it helps keep you in check with consistency. Plus they might introduce you to some exciting new trails you didn't know about!

The Camel Trail, Cornwall

A perfect trail for beginners down south. Once you have enjoyed all the coastal beauties of Cornwall why not get the bike out! The route is ideal for a carefree day of cycling with the family. This trail is actually a disused railway line and is mostly traffic free spanning over 19km of the incredible Cornish countryside, and offers some of the most breath-taking landscapes as you go.

Richmond Park, London

Moving slightly up North we come into the countries capital. There is something idyllic about cycling through Richmond Park. Whilst it is London's most popular cycling spots, you have to remember there is a reason for that. Ideal for beginner or groups of cyclists, you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of St Paul's Cathedral and if you are lucky the park's famous deer!

Elan Valley, Wales

Heading West into Wales we have the Elan Valley. A hidden gem that is well off the beaten track but in the BEST way! Considered one of the best biking spots in Wales, you get to it by following the old Birmingham Corporation Railway line, and is great for all abilities. One your journey you'll be able to see Wildlife Trust Reserve, Rhayader Tunnel, home to a number of bats (spooky); as well as the jaw dropping Garreg Ddu Reservoir a real show stopped!

The Lakeland Loop, Lake District

This is not for the light hearted. This trail was once voted as Britain's best bike ride as it shows the most astonishing views of the lakes.  However, whilst beautiful this trial stretches over 65km and has gradients that reach 30% so make sure that you are well equipped and at the right level before attempting it. But trust us it's worth building up to this ability as the views are spectacular!

Assynt Achiltibuie Circuit, Scotland

Looking for a quieter trail and to really take in the UKs natural beauty? Then this is the trial for you. We all know that Scotland has some of the most incredible backdrops and this route is no different. Beginning in Achiltibuie a full day of cycling will allow you to see views such as Loch Assynt and the ruins of Ardvreck Castle, not to mention coastal roads and mountains on your way!
