Pupdate: Iona, Daisy-May and Samantha
All puppies can seem irresistible, but making sure you research dog breeds throughly before you rehome any dog is key. Spaniels can be excitable and like to please you, Labradors love their food and Collies get bored easily! Meet Iona, who has rehomed not one, not two, but three puppies from Preloved! Hear about what she learnt from bringing up her two eldest dogs Daisy-May and Samantha, two slightly different breeds of dog.
Iona, Daisy-May and Samantha
My dogs are called Daisy-May and Samantha. Daisy-May is 2 years old and is a Cocker Spaniel and Jack Russell cross while Samantha is 3 years old and is a purebred Cocker Spaniel. They have both been with us since they were just a few weeks old.
Daisy-May is a loyal and sweet natured girl, who is prone to her nutty moments when she belts around our garden teasing Samantha and one of our cats - she likes to do this as they can't catch her. Samantha is a typical Cocker, she is a rascal most of the time, but eager to make you smile. She is a dosey date who loves nothing more than being tucked into bed on an evening, all wrapped up in her blanket. And they both love carrots!
I love them both, they are so different and every day they never fail to make me smile. They are loyal friends who bring a spark into our family which is special. However the first few puppy months are not something to take light-heartedly, thinking that it will all run smoothly. Both of them were so different! Samantha ate almost every pair of socks she could get hold of, whereas Daisy took forever to fully house-train. That said, the love your dogs have for you is something special. When we come home (even if your only out for 20 mins) they shower us with joy for us being home again.
The advice I would give to any potential dog owner is to research the breed well. Look mostly at the most challenging aspects and traits related to a breed, if you think you will be able to cope and work through them, then your on the right track. If you find yourself trying to convince yourself that it will be okay, then please look into a different breed.
To complete our family, we have just rehomed our third puppy from Preloved, Pippa! Pippa is a patterdale Terrier and is just 14 weeks old. She has already settled in very well, and our experience with our other two girls has shown us how to make our home puppy safe and secure. With the help of Daisy-May and Samantha to show the way, hopefully we won't have any munched up socks or persistant house training issues this time round!
