Reptile Awareness Day 2023

It’s nearly time for Reptile Awareness Day 2023. Celebrated on October 21st this year, it’s a special day to encourage people to learn more about these amazing and unique creatures and to understand the importance of conservation efforts to help protect them. Reptiles in the wild face many threats. These include losing their natural habitats and the illegal wildlife trade. So what can we all do to help?

Reptile Awareness Day: Ways To Get Involved

  • Visit A Sanctuary. Spend the day at a reptile sanctuary or zoo to learn more about various reptile species and their conservation needs. Entrance fees are typically reinvested into conservation projects as well as general care.
  • Support Conservation Organisations. Groups like ARC (Amphibian & Reptile Conservation) are a national wildlife charity committed to saving the disappearing habitats on which they depend.
  • Learn about Local Reptiles. Find out which species live near you and understand their importance in the local eco-system.
  • Advocate for Responsible Pet Ownership. If you have reptile pets, advocate for responsible pet ownership and proper care practices.

Looking To Adopt An Exotic Pet?

Our friends over at Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG) have put together a great little Reptile Buying Checklist. This is a handy tool for any would-be owners to see what to look out for.

  • Research before you buy.
  • Consider contacting your local animal rescue/rehoming centre.
  • Seek advice from reputable pet shops, breeders, books and websites.
  • Ensure you know what equipment you’ll need. You’ll need to control temperature, humidity, light quality, etc.
  • Ensure you buy from someone who specialises in the animal you’re interested in.
  • Visit the animal you intend to buy before you make any decisions.
  • If you’re buying an accommodation set-up with your new pet check what you’re getting. Is it clean? Does it include food and water receptacles? Does it have the special environment equipment like heat lamps etc?
  • Ensure that all relevant paperwork is available for inspection when you visit
  • If any paperwork is unavailable and has to be sent on, obtain a written commitment as to when it will be delivered
  • Ensure that the animal you’re buying is healthy and free from signs of injury or disease
  • Reptiles can sometimes require specialist care from a veterinary surgeon and may require referral to a specialist which can be expensive
