5 Ways To Help Save The Ocean
Starting tomorrow is the beginning of The Great British Beach Clean. Be sure to check out our previous blog about the great work this initiative provides. With this running over the next week we thought we'd offer some other solutions to helping out. Here are 5 ways to help save the ocean.
Why Get Involved
Here at Preloved we love getting our hands dirty and helping where we can. With events like The Great British Beach Clean you are lucky enough to really see the difference you are making. Sometimes it's not so obvious. When that's the case we tend to forget to make these changes. That's why we think it's important to keep learning how to help. Also with sustainability being strongly linked to our vision objectives we want to help educate our members.
When it comes to the ocean it is greatly important we act now and fast as it covers 70% of our earth's surface. It's vast size also helps our ecosystem, weather patterns, and regulating our climate. Which means when it isn't probably cared for then it affects climate change and pollution. Can lead to rare and crazy weather phenomena's. As we all worked together to get those in higher power to help in our effects to keep the oceans clean and in check there are also many things YOU can be doing.
1. Skip The Single Use Plastic
Single use plastics are things like non-reusable water bottles, plastic straws, take out containers and plastic bags. There are roughly 8 million tonnes of single use plastics dumped into the ocean every year. Which might have you thinking how is me stopping using them going to help. Well on average you use 584 straws a year. These are the slow and coincided steps that we need to start making, because when we come together those 584 straws avoiding the ocean will add up.
2. Reduce Your Carbon Emission
It sounds much harder than it actually is. With the cost of living increasing, this one will not only benefit the ocean but can help you make your money go further. By turning off your lights, unplugging your electronics when they aren't being used, and not turning the heating on when you've just got a chill. You will helping to save the ocean.
3. Travel Together
Continuing on the trend of lowering your carbon emission and yourself some money we are looking at public transport. If you are able to take the tram, train or bus into work then look into how much a season pass could be. If you are close enough to walk then no excuses come rain or shine get those steps in. It's good for your mind, your pocket and the planet. If it's that bit further than invest in a bicycle!
4. Eat Sustainable Seafood
Seafood is a healthy and light option for dinner, with fish Friday being a staple in the British household. However, when you purchasing it it's good to educate yourself on the wild fisheries. The easiest way to do this before getting caught up in labels is to shop local. This way you can be assured that the air freight is low and you are getting fresh produce.
5. Volunteer When You Can
We know that you won't all have the time and resources available to join initiatives likes The Great British Beach Clean. However, those that can, it is a great way to contribute and help towards clearing up our planet. A job shared really is a job halved so the more of you that can volunteer the better. Failing that just encourage others or do you own bit and make sure you aren't littering.
