15 things you shouldn’t put down the drain
Unblocktober - a month to save our sewers and seas.
This October we are supporting Unblocktober, an initiative bringing awareness to improve the health of drains, sewers, watercourses and seas. Britain's sewer network is under growing pressure due to the irresponsible actions of the British public, consistently flushing and pouring liquids dangerous to our sewer network and sea down the drain and toilet.
So what is the consequence?
This leads to the creation of fatbergs, enormous masses of congealed fat, oil, grease, wet wipes, period products, cotton buds and much more. But it is even worse than this; because many of these products are non-biodegradable and contain hidden plastics. This means by putting them in our drains, the chances of plastic making its way into our rivers and seas are drastically increased.
So how can you make a difference?
We have compiled a list of items we are asking you to pay more attention to when disposing of. Unblocktober is asking you to commit to putting none of the following 16 items down your drains or toilets this month!
1. Cooking oil
2. Food - even crumbs!
3. Butter
4. Margarine
5. Lard
6. Cooking sauce
7. Wet wipes
8. Period products (tampons, sanitary pads)
9. Cotton buds
