Let’s Talk Sustainable Fashion And Second Hand Vintage!
What Is Vintage Clothing?
The word 'vintage' is a bit of a catch all term for any style that represents a certain era. It usually covers the last 100 years.
Trends In Women's Fashion Through The Eras
1920s: Straight cut dresses, lowly worn belts, cloche hats, strappy shoes with buckles and bows. 1930s: Softer styles, with collars, pleats, and darts to keep things interesting. 1940s: War rationing led to more practical clothing with plenty of buttons and pockets. Skirts rose to their most risqué length, just below the knee. 1950s: Post-war comeback of glamour. Defined waistlines, full skirts, colourful prints, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. 1960s: Fun styles, shorter hemlines, shift dresses, bright colours, oversized collars, and mini skirts. 1970s: Flamboyant styles influenced by hippy culture. Wide leg trousers, wild prints, and platform shoes. 1980s: Intense colours made a break-through, short skirts, unusual materials, heavily padded shoulders, designer labels became 'status' pieces. 1990s: Minimalist, grunge, relaxed look, sneakers and t-shirts, casual-chic. Modern sport and street fashion were popular.
Shop For Second Hand Vintage And Be Unique
Today's high street clothing stores have rows of identical garments, all available in several colours. It makes it a little hard to stand out in a crowd!
By shopping for second hand vintage you can choose unique one-off items, and accessorise in a way that best represents your style. Mix and match the old with the new to give outfits a stand-out edge. Chances are, nobody else will have that same item, because they're no longer being made.
And second hand vintage clothes allow you to grab some great brands and designer items much cheaper than buying new.
Benefits Of Buying Second Hand Vintage
As well as saving you money, you'll be extending the life-cycle of the items, saving them from landfill. This sustainable alternative to fast fashion helps the planet in so many ways.
The old adage 'They don't make them like the used to' is true. Fast fashion demand for new collections so soon after they're showcased on the runway means the quality is often compromised. 40 years ago, items were made at a slower pace, using better materials, and they were build to last! Consider the quality of a 30 year old jacket you can find second hand today. Now consider the quality of a modern day high street equivalent 30 years from now. Think it would last that long?
